Q: How did you first hear about the Tennis on Campus program? What made you decide to actively take part and also become a leader on your campus? How do you feel about TOC and being a captain?
I first heard about the TOC program through Linda Milan. Wade Houldin, my co-founder, and I reached out to Linda my freshman year to see what sorts of help she could be to help us start our club. When I entered SDSU my freshman year four years ago, there was not a club tennis program. Our team tables the first couple weeks of each school year to educate and inform incoming freshman about our team and the Tennis on Campus program.
Q: In what ways has your team improved this year?
Our team has improved tremendously in the past year. I think a lot of it is due to our coach, Jordan Lomas. He has really helped us grow together as a team and as individuals on the tennis court.
Q: What do you tell new players about Nationals, or players that are traveling for the first time to compete for your school?
When we travel and new players are joining us I tell them that the environment that TOC produces is infectious. It is incredible to be around so many fun, talented tennis players. The best part is that the program is extremely competitive yet fun.
Q: Does your team actively use social media to stay connected? If so, what social media platforms are your favorites? Does your team use social media in any special way that you feel sets you apart from other teams?
We use an app called TeamSnap to communicate with one another. We have a Facebook page and we're on Instagram @sdsuclubtennis.
Q: Do you have many seniors on your team? Do you think they know about opportunities after graduation like “Sets in the City” or young adult social leagues? Do you think anyone on your team would be interested in starting one?
We have four or five seniors on our team. I do not think they know about programs like Sets in the City, but I think many would be interested.
Share with us some of the ways you help out in the local and global communities in the name of tennis.
The four executive officers on our team went to a College Knowledge Forum in December to inform high school students about how they can get involved in Tennis on Campus when they enter college. We have also volunteer at Feeding America a few times.
Share with us a funny story about the 2015 team or team member(s).
Throughout this season we have started a few cheers of our own. One of them is: when a team member hits a really good shot we say that was “huge.” Another way we pump each other up is by saying “yaa.” Throughout the season it seems as if it has stuck with a few other teams in our section. That’s when you know you have a good cheering squad, when another team adapts your cheering strategies.
If a local newspaper was to write a story about your team what is the one thing you’d want to make sure they included?
This past November we hosted our first annual SDSU Club Tennis Tournament. It was a huge accomplishment for our team considering we have only been an established club for three years. We had a total of 16 teams and approximately 120 individuals in the tournament. We ended up winning the entire tournament which was a huge accomplishment.
