Q: How did you first hear about the Tennis On Campus program? What made you decide to actively take part and also become a leader on your campus? How do you feel about TOC and being a captain?

I played a lot of tennis in high school and definitely wanted to keep playing in college. I joined the tennis club right away and absolutely loved it. Everyone was really welcoming and had a lot of passion for the sport and the club. I decided to run for an officer position because I wanted to take a larger role in making the club the best that it could be.

Along the way I went to a lot of TOC events, met new people, and came to think of the club members as family. TOC and Club Tennis have given me some of my best experiences in college and I’m proud to be the captain of such an awesome group of people.

Q: In what ways has your team improved this year?

We’ve definitely added a lot more depth to our team. Our returning members have improved and we have a few new members who are solid doubles players.

Q: What do you tell new players about Nationals, or players that are traveling for the first time to compete for your school?

Don’t be nervous and just have fun.

Q: Does your team actively use social media to stay connected? If so, what social media platforms are your favorites?  Does your team use social media in any special way that you feel sets you apart from other teams?

We have an excellent social chair. We regularly post on our Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram accounts. Our team uses social media to post updates about the club, share pictures of our practices, and try to reach out to everyone who may be interested in joining.

Q: Do you have many seniors on your team? Do you think they know about opportunities after graduation like “Sets in the City” or young adult social leagues? Do you think anyone on your team would be interested in starting one?

We have a lot of seniors on our team. They definitely know about opportunities like Sets in the City and a few of our past members have started their own leagues. I think some of our members would be interested in starting more.

Share with us some of the ways you help out in the local and global communities in the name of tennis.

We donate twice a year to charities and volunteer at tennis events to help younger kids get interested in the sport.

Share with us a funny story about the 2015 team or team member(s).

We had an impromptu karaoke session at the Club Tennis potluck last semester. One of our seniors decided to do a rendition of “Let it Go” from the movie Frozen…complete with dance moves. It was incredible.

If a local newspaper was to write a story about your team what is the one thing you’d want to make sure they included?

We accept everyone into our club regardless of skill level and try to make our practices as inclusive as possible. All of us love tennis and want to see more people get involved with the sport.
