Cal Berkeley started the night off with a bang, winning women’s doubles 6-2 and women’s singles 6-3. Men’s doubles partners and brothers Scott and Kevin Runda from the University of Florida gave Cal-Berkeley a run for their money but came up short losing the match 6-3.
Cal Berkeley’s men’s singles player Leonid Rozkin continued the team’s dominant run heading into men’s singles by jumping out to an early 4-2 lead. The momentum shifted for University of Florida when sophomore star Kenny Palmer battled back to lead 5-4, but Rozkin’s strong serve and powerful ground strokes were too much to overcome and Cal Berkeley took the match 6-5.
The University of Florida hoped for a miracle when its mixed doubles team took the court. However, the lead amassed by Cal Berkeley was too great a force to reckon with. The University of California – Berkeley ultimately captured the title 30-14.
Cal Berkeley senior Peter Del Moral had this to say about his team’s victory, “Going into tonight’s finals we didn’t know what to expect from Florida because we hadn’t seen them play, but they put up a good fight and there were a lot of close points. Overall, it was a great match.”
Cal Berkeley reached the Championship match today by defeating UCLA in the semifinals 25-20. It was a great run for the Golden Bears who displayed not only excellent tennis, but also great sportsmanship.
Special guest and Tennis great Katrina Adams was on hand as the official Event Emcee.
