The USTA Tennis On Campus Club of the Year Award honors a Tennis On Campus club for significant improvements in their program and how it commits time and resources to benefit its community. This year’s winner, UC Davis, is a close-knit, 90% self-financed, and diverse club of over 250 recreational and competitive players whose goal is to spread the joys of tennis through volunteering and mentoring. For its impact on the Davis community at large, the UC Davis Club holds a number of charitable events per year and has strong partnerships with local businesses. For example, the club partners with the USTA to provide a free clinic to over 400 underprivileged kids every year. In addition, the team offers a membership card which allows for discounts at local Davis merchandisers. “It is remarkable to see how many of these student-led programs commit their time, energy and resources to improving their local communities,” said Glenn Arrington, USTA Tennis On Campus National Program Manager. “It was a very difficult decision because so many of our teams are great ambassadors not just for tennis, but also their campuses. In the end, the team from University of California, Davis stood out from the crowd, and they should be proud of their achievements.” The USTA Tennis On Campus program will present the University of California, Davis the Club of the Year award during the 2009 USTA National Campus Championship, to be held April 16-18, 2009 at the award-winning Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona. |
2009 Tennis On Campus Leader of the Year Award - Steven Azeka, California Polytechnic State University | ||||

The USTA Tennis On Campus Leader of the Year Award is designed to honor an individual college student leader for significant contributions made to the USTA Tennis On Campus program at his or her school. Steven Azeka of California Polytechnic State University has led his Tennis On Campus team in a range of different ventures, and has implemented several programs to increase tennis awareness and give back to the community. Steve created the Southern California Tennis Committee that acts as a resource and helps other Tennis On Campus programs in Southern California. He explains, “Between meetings I have established a Facebook group, which acts as an open forum to create and reflect on other ideas. Even with our short time in the program, I wanted to help other universities develop their programs.” In addition, Steve and his team participated in the Taste of Tennis program (introducing and developing tennis with inner-city kids) in Los Angeles. The experience inspired him to start a community service project, encouraging all the universities in California to participate in a day focused on developing youth tennis programs within their respective communities. “The ‘Tennis for Kids Day,’ with the help of Katie Pruitt at USC, should become one of the largest community service projects in the program,” continued Steve. In February 2009, Steve received the Southern California Tennis Association Service Award for outstanding community service and support of the Tennis On Campus program, which led to his recognition as the USTA’s Leader of the Year Award. The USTA Tennis On Campus program will present Steven Azeka his award during the 2009 USTA National Campus Championship, to be held April 16-18, 2009 at the award-winning Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona. |
